A Millcreek Township man was arraigned Saturday on charges including criminal homicide/murder in the death of 20-year-old Marinda Matasowski.

James M. Gilbert, who turns 24 on Sunday, was also charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and possessing instruments of crime, Millcreek Township police said in a news release. Gilbert was arraigned by Summit Township District Judge Brian McGowan at UPMC Hamot, where Gilbert is recovering from a self-inflicted stab wound to the chest.

A request for bail was denied, Millcreek police said. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled for later in August.

A 4½-hour autopsy Saturday afternoon on Matasowski’s body revealed that the woman died from stab wounds to the trunk, Erie County Deputy Coroner John Maloney said.

Maloney ruled the death as a homicide.

Millcreek police charged that Gilbert stabbed Matasowski after 10 p.m. Thursday night inside a residence in the 5700 block of Mill Street. The couple had arrived at the residence a short time earlier.

Another person who was inside the house at the time told police that Matasowski and Gilbert, who was identified in an affidavit of probable cause as Matasowski’s boyfriend, had come to the residence and walked downstairs to the living room.

A short time later a loud scream was heard and the person saw Matasowski over the couch, with Gilbert standing over her with a blood-covered knife in his hand, investigators wrote in the affidavit. He later stabbed himself in the chest.

Matasowski was pronounced dead at the scene by Erie County Deputy Coroner John Maloney on Friday at 12:31 a.m.
