A 16-year-old boy was placed in detention and faces aggravated assault and strangulation charges after Erie police said he choked a teacher at Erie High School on Thursday morning.

The incident happened at Erie High School, 3325 Cherry St., on Thursday at about 9 a.m. The boy was involved in a fight that a 39-year-old male teacher attempted to break up when the 16-year-old began choking the teacher, Erie police Lt. Jon Peters said. The incident was captured on surveillance video, Peters said.

The boy was placed in the Edmund L. Thomas Juvenile Detention Center, Peters said.

Daria Devlin, the Erie School District’s coordinator of grants and community relations, said Friday morning that the district could not comment on the incident.
