The death of an Erie man who was shot inside his westside apartment on Monday night has been ruled a homicide, Erie County’s first in 2019.
The man, who is in his 50s, died of a gunshot wound to the chest, Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said Tuesday afternoon following an autopsy by Erie County forensic pathologist Eric Vey, M.D. The man’s name has not been released because authorities are still searching for members of his family, Cook said.
The man was inside his apartment at 429 Chestnut St. with other people when someone came to the apartment and shot him, Erie police reported Tuesday morning. The suspect or suspects then fled the apartment.
The victim was shot once, Erie police Lt. Jon Peters said.
The incident was reported on Monday at 10:14 p.m., when Erie police and EmergyCare paramedics were called to the apartment on a report of an assault involving a gunshot, according to Erie County 911.
The man who was shot lives in the apartment, which is one of several units in a large apartment house on the northeast corner of Chestnut and West Fifth streets, according to police.
Several other people were inside the apartment with the shooting victim when the incident took place. One of those people was hit in the head during the incident, Peters said.
